Position Overview

The African Wildlife is seeking a Washington, DC/New York-based Media Relations Manager to support its media and public relations efforts in North America and Europe. Successful candidates will have media relations and public relations experience both corporate and agency side with an exemplary ability to position a brand as a thought leader in its industry. S/he should be proactive, results-oriented, creative, and flexible.

The Media Relations Manager will demonstrate a solid understanding of media relations' best practices and knowledge of the media landscape in the regions s/he will work.

The Media Relations Manager is tasked with raising awareness about the African Wildlife Foundation brand and conservation projects working under the direction of the Senior Media Relations Manager based in our Nairobi, Kenya Headquarters. S/he will be responsible for managing the day-to-day working relationship with our media agency partner and developing close relationships with top-tier press.

Ideal candidates are passionate about maximizing near-term opportunities such as project launches and thought leadership while also building strategic, long-term opportunities for increasing AWF's brand awareness and perception in the North American and European markets. Applicants for this position should be proactive, self-starters with a passion for pitching and a proven ability to successfully place spokespeople and brands in the media.

The Media Relations Manager will be working in a fast-paced, global environment where brand recognition and positive press coverage is critical to achieving the overall goals of the organization.

Responsibilities 

Help develop and lead media relation's activities to increase awareness for the African Wildlife Foundation in North America and Europe. Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Managing the day-to-day relationship with the media agency partner to drive exceptional media results (coverage, message pull-though and penetration, increasing share of voice).
  • Developing and supporting the execution of media outreach strategies for thought leadership and project/organization announcements to reporters and bloggers in the broadcast, digital, radio and print space.
  • Working closely with senior leadership to position them within the media. Assisting and supporting regional media tours and media briefings with c-level executives and partners.
  • Communicating with staff to secure media stories, angles and opportunities for promotion.
  • Writing press releases, pitches, bylined articles, case studies, backgrounders/briefings, social media posts.
  • Monitoring company, industry and competitive news and developing creative ways to consistently insert African Wildlife Foundation into conversations through compelling thought leadership.
  • Planning and managing press conferences and media events. 

Key Metrics 

  • Quarterly and yearly analytics based on number of impressions and overall ad value of media placements and cross-promotional partner campaigns in North America and Europe. 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree - preferably in public relations, journalism or related field.
  • 4-6 years of corporate and public relations agency experience.
  • Experience in reputation management and positioning a corporation or organization within the public eye through strategic use of media relations.
  • Direct experience with North America-based media and familiarity with European media outlets, including broadcast, radio and print reporters in the economic, political and conservation space, freelancers, bloggers, and social media influencers.
  • Proven ability to successfully place brands and spokespeople in the media. Have a love of pitching media and finding the story angle to place brands in industry media conversations with a deep understanding of how media works.
  • Exceptional writing, communications and interpersonal skills. Team player who demonstrates a consistently positive attitude. Entrepreneurial with an ability to build a media operation from the ground up.
  • Proven crisis communications experience and comfort level assessing and determining a course of action in crisis situations.
  • Proven knowledge of blogger and influencer relations and social media best practices.
  • Experience planning, organizing and managing press conferences and media events.
  • Careful attention to detail in both internal and external communications. Experience representing a brand to media.
  • Results-oriented, with solid critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently.
  • Flexible and proactive in working with global teams. Exposure to African and Asian markets a plus.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize under tight deadlines. 
  • Enthusiasm and a "can-do" attitude with a diplomatic approach to staff, media and spokespeople.
  • Creative and aggressive in identifying ways to insert the African Wildlife Foundation into media conversations with an ability to listen to the news cycle to identify opportunities.
