Position Overview

North Wind Group is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist for support of environmental projects in Alaska.

This position will support environmental projects in Alaska. Support the sampling of various media, field data collection activities including groundwater quality and GPS surveys, and support environmental drilling operations. Support project management, prepare planning documents and reports, direct field teams conducting site assessments, and interact with regulatory agencies to develop successful solutions to project challenges.

Apply regulatory scientific principles to assist clients in the following areas: environmental impact assessment and mitigation, site investigation, soil and groundwater remediation, wastewater conveyance and treatment, land management, waste management, and other environmental areas. 


Essential Duties 

  • Perform field work to collect soil, water, air, or other samples.
  • Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers, and other specialists, to address environmental problems.
  • Provide scientific and technical guidance, support, coordination, and oversight to governmental agencies, environmental programs, industry, or the public.
  • Communicate scientific and technical information to clients, or internal audiences through oral briefings, written documents, and formal meetings.
  • Inspect facilities and programs to evaluate operational effectiveness and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • May review permit applications and/or enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to environmental protection.
  • Participate in the preparation of work plans for a wide variety of customers.
  • Prepare, review, and update technical and recommendation reports.
  • Provide assistance in regulatory analysis, and planning or reviewing database development.
  • Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide technical-level support for environmental remediation and investigation projects.
  • Monitor progress of environmental improvement programs.
  • Participate in field efforts to support the successful execution of projects.
  • Participate in the preparation of work plans and reports for a wide variety of customers.
  • Under the guidance of the Project Manager, evaluate analytical laboratory data and draw conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors to determine project schedules.
  • Direct field activities under the guidance of the Field Manager.
  • Arrange travel and logistics for projects. 


Knowledge & Experience 

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering or science related field. 
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental areas and 7 years is preferred.
  • Current HAZWOPER certification, CPR/First Aid required.

Skills & Abilities 

  • Computer knowledge and efficiency, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to perform field assignments as part of a team or independently. 
  • Ability to utilize multiple word-processing and database applications including MS Office applications Word, Excel, Access, as well as Adobe Acrobat, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow instructions/schedules/timelines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication, prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Excellent proof-reading and writing skills.
  • Training in OSHA HAZWOPER and First Aid/CPR.
  • General knowledge of IH instrumentation use and interpretation of results. 
  • Understanding of IH and Safety issues as defined by the scope of work and associated Occupational Safety and Health performance requirements. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and follow procedures and task requirements. 
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately document survey and data collection results. Demonstrated ability to use different levels of PPE (including respiratory protection). Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with field, project management, and contractor representatives is essential. 
  • Ability to participate in physically demanding work while wearing personal protective equipment including respiratory protection. Medically qualified to wear a respirator, able to lift 30 pounds, and able to climb ladders.
  • Experience working on drilling projects.

Work Conditions 

  • This position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching.
  • He/she must be able to navigate the jobsite and must comply with all Company safety requirements in the office and on the jobsite.
  • Heavy equipment may be used and he/she needs to be able to lift weighty objects.
