Position Overview

A leader with passion for protecting land who demonstrates the ability to energetically engage the community, foster strategic partnerships, close deals, and broaden support for rural conservation efforts. Responsibilities include strategic planning, outreach and fundraising, land conservation and stewardship, community relations, financial management, and team/staff leadership. 


Program Leadership:

  • Develop and implement programs aligned with the organization's current five-year Strategic Plan.
  • Increase OLT's portfolio of conservation easements.
  • Negotiate complex and innovative conservation real estate transactions with landowners and partners.
  • Position the land trust as a regional and national leader in land conservation.
  • Work with partners and landowners to enhance farm-land protection in OLTs region.
  • Increase regional public support for the land trust, and conservation in general, through education and programming.  

Fundraising, Community Engagement and Communications:

  • Expand grant funding from government agencies, private foundations and philanthropic organizations by deepening existing relationships and identifying new ones.
  • Develop broader support for regional land conservation among individuals and businesses.
  • Lead and launch a focused major-donor development program.
  • Build reserve and endowment funds.
  • Develop community-based initiatives and education programs to expand awareness of local, regional, and global conservation efforts.
  • Oversee the development of volunteer programs.
  • Serve as spokesperson with media, government agencies, partner organizations, foundations, donors, and the general public.
  • Oversee and direct clear and consistent outreach publications and press releases to create meaningful communications for our stakeholders.

Management and Administration:

  • Manage annual work planning, as it relates to organizational goals and capacity, in collaboration with its active and engaged Board of Directors and staff.
  • Supervise skilled, highly motivated staff of 3.5, employ teambuilding, training and performance evaluation practices that ensure a constructive and supportive working environment focused on collaboration and teamwork.
  • Oversee records management, including conservation easements, preparation of contracts with suppliers and service providers, and production of reports necessary to meet operational needs, as well as state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Develop annual budget, in partnership with the Board and with input from staff; provide timely reports of the organization's financial position to the Board; and manage budget compliance and variances.
  • Serve as chief liaison for all land trust activities, facilitating the work of Board committees.
  • Manage an effective administrative office in compliance with Land Trust Standards and Practices.

  • Communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively.
  • Use computers proficiently including MS Office Pro and other office systems.

Education and professional experience desired to include:

  • 5 to 7 years professional experience either in managing a growing nonprofit organization, preferably in the area of land conservation, or equivalent leadership and administrative experience in another field.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, real estate transactions, business, marketing, outreach and/or related
  • fields preferred.
  • Familiarity with Land Trust Alliance's, Land Trust Standards & Practices.
  • Minimum of 4-year degree and training in natural resources management, land use planning, business administration, communications or a related field.
