Field Naturalist

Position Overview

We are currently recruiting for energetic professionals to serve as Field Naturalists for the OCDE Inside the Outdoors (ITO) School, Field and Community Programs. Our ITO School, Field, and Community Programs are unique and hands-on science, social science, and environmental education programs.

Field Naturalists teach science and environmental education to students, kindergarten through twelfth grade. The students spend the day at one of the various field sites. Students will study tide pools, chaparrals, riparian (stream), and estuary ecosystems. Information on Native American lifestyles, living history, and geology are also integrated into the program.

Our Field Naturalists typically have a work schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Part-time positions available; Field Naturalist may also work at promotional events and teach community programs. Additional night, and weekend shifts may be available. Though regularly scheduled during a traditional school calendar, this position is considered a temporary classification with hourly pay.


  • Lead and instruct small groups of K-6th grade students during hands-on science and social science Field Trips at various sites within Orange County.
  • This position is ideal for individuals interested in the environment or those looking for teaching experience.
  • Broaden the students' and the communities' knowledge of science concepts.
  • Foster students' and the communities' commitment to the protection of the natural environment.
  • Encourage students' and the communities' awareness and appreciation of the environment.

Compensation: Starting pay is $13.50 per hour
