~ The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association whose broad mission is to enhance the climate for housing, homeownership and the residential building industry. ~

A federation of more than 800 state and local associations, NAHB represents more than 140,000 members nationwide. About one-third of NAHB's members are home builders and/or remodelers. The others are associates working in closely related specialties such as sales and marketing, housing finance, and manufacturing and supplying building materials.

Since its inception in the early 1940s, NAHB has served as "the voice of America's housing industry." Its primary goals are to ensure that housing is a national priority and that all Americans have access to safe, decent and affordable housing, whether they choose to buy a home or rent.

NAHB's Annual Convention and Exposition, known as the International Builders' Show or IBS, is the largest show of its kind for the residential and light commercial construction industry. 

Position Overview

NAHB is seeking an experienced energy and green building professional to participate in the construction, codes and standards development process.

Responsibilities  

  • The individual will represent NAHB at various codes and standards development organizations and conduct critical analyses of proposed code changes.
  • He/she will be required to prepare rigorous public comments to support NAHB policy and testify on behalf of the association.
  • This position is also responsible for assisting NAHB members, staff, committees and others with technical issues related to residential construction codes and standards.
  • The program manager will also prepare and/or present articles, status updates, webinars and other related materials. 

Qualifications 

  • Qualified candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and effectively articulate NAHB's position in committee and hearing environments. Additionally, the candidate must be able to develop and maintain professional relationships and working positively with codes-related committees, groups, voting members, allies, and other interested parties.
  • Applicants must be able to review and understand legislative and regulatory information related to building codes and material/design standards and offer solutions.
  • The position requires good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with others in addition to possessing intermediate knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software applications.
  • Individuals should bring a minimum of 5 years of experience related to design, construction, plan review and/or inspection of both single-family homes and multifamily buildings ensuring compliance to building/construction codes and standards. 
  • Experience in residential energy conservation or green building practices is necessary and the application of the International Residential Code and the International Building Code is desired. 
  • The ideal candidate will have prior experience in national model codes and standards development, such as ICC or ASHRAE.
  • This position requires a college degree preferably in engineering, construction management, material science or architecture, or equivalent in education and experience.
