Summer Camp Teacher/Naturalist

The New Jersey Audubon Society is a privately supported, not-for profit, statewide membership organization. Founded in 1897, and one of the oldest independent Audubon societies, New Jersey Audubon has no connection with the National Audubon Society.

New Jersey Audubon fosters environmental awareness and a conservation ethic among New Jersey's citizens; protects New Jersey's birds, mammals, other animals, and plants, especially endangered and threatened species; and promotes preservation of New Jersey's valuable natural habitats.

Position Overview:

The Summer Camp teacher/naturalist has duties primarily in the education branch of the NJ Audubon mission and provides hands-on activities, games, crafts and nature exploration in a day-camp setting. He/she will work directly with the Sanctuary Director to develop and teach the programs. The teacher-naturalist takes an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon as a membership-based conservation organization. 

Responsibilities:

Educational Programming and Visitor Services

  • Plan, develop (if applicable) and conduct natural history programs for children aged 4 to 11 years old. Programs will have a strong focus on awareness and respect for the natural world. 
  • Maintain lesson plans, educational materials and all other related programming information as required.
  • Help in the care, feeding, and well being of live animals that are presented for educational purposes. 

Membership

  • Strive to increase NJ Audubon membership base.

Facilities / Property

  • Assist with care and maintenance of the grounds, gardens, and trail system as needed. 

Other

  • Prepare written reports, proposals and plans as required.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as requested. 

Qualifications:

  • Educational background in the sciences or education, preferred. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of natural history of NJ.
  • Prior experience working with young children in an outdoor setting.
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ; the physical capacity to walk throughout the land and buildings of the sanctuary, able to move materials and lift 50 lbs and operate mechanical equipment as needed. 

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to accept direction and constructive criticism. 
  • Motivated self-starter who is also a team player.
  • Punctual with effective time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written skills required. 
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office) to fulfill the job requirements.
  • Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
