The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a public policy trade association, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director, Energy Policy & Programs (Director of Energy).

About the Silicon Valley Leadership Group:

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group (Leadership Group), founded in 1978 by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, represents more than 375 of Silicon Valley's most respected employers. Leadership Group members collectively provide nearly one of every three private sector jobs in Silicon Valley. The Silicon Valley Leadership Group is a member-driven organization engaged in issues impacting both the economic health and quality of life in the Silicon Valley region, including housing, transportation, environment, energy, education, taxation and health care.

Position Summary:

The Leadership Group is seeking a highly qualified candidate to serve as Director of Energy. In this role, you will help the Leadership Group's members and partners define and carry out energy-related policy, programs and events.

You will also advocate for reliable, high quality, environmentally sensitive and competitively priced power in a transparent, market-based system that maximizes innovation and customer choice for the benefit of all Californians.

Roles 

  • Staff the Leadership Group's energy committee and various subcommittees.
  • Develop policy positions and advocate for clean technology, renewable energy, and other energy-related policy at the local, state and federal level. 
  • Involve member companies, as well as other stakeholders, partners and organizations, in the Leadership Group's policy committees, policy initiatives, and events.
  • Serve as lead in the design, development and staffing of signature events for the Leadership Group including the Energy and Sustainability Summit and Data Center Efficiency Summit. 
  • Project-manage the Pacific Gas & Electric Company and Leadership Group partnership in driving energy efficiency, demand response and renewable energy adoption. 
  • Participate in cross-functional teams consisting of Leadership Group staff and members to achieve Leadership Group objectives for Local, State and Federal Government Advocacy. 
  • Co-Manage the Energy and Environment Associate. 
  • Assist in communicating the Leadership Group's mission, objectives, success and activities to the membership and broader community. 
  • Represent the Leadership Group on various community boards, committees, organizations and task forces as appropriate.
  • Represent the Leadership Group at public and private forums including conferences, press conferences, hearings and receptions. 

Responsibilities:

Energy Committee Staffing and Management 

  • Managing committee input on successes, goals and objectives.
  • Ensure that committees and coalitions are strategically focused on achievable objectives. 
  • Recommend appropriate policy positions by researching legislation and public policy issues affecting member companies, providing information regarding competing viewpoints and recommending a position to policy committees.
  • Coordinating speakers for meetings to better inform members of the issues. 
  • Developing meeting agendas in coordination with committee chairs. 

Advocacy 

  • Participating in Washington DC and Sacramento advocacy trips. (The job requires regular travel to Sacramento and San Francisco.)
  • Partnering with other associations, community leaders, and organizations on issues of mutual interest. 
  • Provide comments and testimony as part of the CPUC and CEC processes.
  • Building coalitions and reaching consensus in support of the Leadership Group's policy positions. 
  • Developing relationships with key policy makers to help keep them abreast of Leadership Group's policy priorities and positions. 
  • Writing letters and providing testimony on Leadership Group's positions to appropriate policy makers. 
  • Coordinating letters and testimony from Leadership Group member companies and appropriate community groups and associations in support of the Leadership Group's position.
  • Assisting in developing press strategy on policy and events. 
  • Drafting and submitting Letters to the Editor, Guest Op-eds, etc. 

Membership Management 

  • Meet with potential members, cultivate relationships with new members and deepen partnerships with existing members in policy, programs and events.
  • Facilitate engagement of members in the work of the Energy Committee and Subcommittees and other program areas, as appropriate. 

Develop, Design, & Market Energy-Related Events by: 

  • Recruiting and leading planning teams to design content and agenda for energy events. 
  • Design and implement marketing plans to identify and recruit sponsors. 

Qualifications:

Skills 

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to set and achieve short and long-term objectives.
  • Ability to effectively plan and facilitate events and meetings.
  • Ability to manage staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong and collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of different people. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Policy experience in more than one area, including but not limited to: energy efficiency, renewable energy, natural gas, climate change and clean tech business.
  • Knowledge and experience in public policy process and political dynamics. 
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as policy, science or business. 
  • Experience building and managing collaborative relationships.
  • Experience in program management, budgeting and implementation.
  • Excellent written, verbal, public speaking and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational development, strategic planning and problem solving skills. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Strong preference will be given to candidates with: 

  • Experience working for a public policy association.
  • Experience working on energy policy. 
  • Good relationships with California Bay Area lawmakers, utilities, municipal elected officials, and area business and non-profit executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement large and substantive revenue-generating events. 

Compensation:

Salary Range is $60,000 - $90,000, depending upon qualifications and experience.

The benefits package includes paid holidays, two weeks annual accrued vacation to start; medical, dental, long term disability and life insurance coverage paid for employee; 401K plan participation after six months of employment, and Ecopass.
