I work with a company that distributes energy to low income households and rural areas using rechargeable batteries that provide power to light up to 4 lights, charge a phone and listen to radio for 3-5 days. The customer returns the depleted battery to their local charging station or distributor to be swapped for a fully charged one. The company has also recently introduced small solar home systems mainly for lighting and charging phones.
Over the years, one of the biggest challenges i have seen is money. The product is brilliant, according to our customers, the price is reasonable compared to their current sources of energy such as kerosene and disposable batteries.
As we are all aware, renewable energy can solve major power problems in Africa, but most of our customers are seasonal crop growers, people with small busniesses, such as market stalls, factory workers etc. Its difficult for them to have a lump sum of cash at any time.
What I'm looking for is a partner interested in starting a finance company to lend for energy purposes only, specifically for the people at the low end of the pyramid.
Being a Tanzanian I have substantial experience with this market, so the ideal partner will have an extensive background in fund raising and also micro financing.
